Friends and
family members play a vast variety of roles in the lives of
long term survivors. While relating to friends and family
about survivorship issues can be a source of stress for survivors,
friends and family can also be a critical source of support.
Everything on the Cancer Survivors Project website that is
relevant to a long term survivor is equally relevant to a
friend or family member who wants to be involved in a positive
way.
The long-term survivors email
list:
Another valuable potential resource for friends and family
members is the LT-SURVIVORS email list. The List
is a way for survivors, their friends and family, and health
care professionals to share information, advice and hope
about the emotional and health issues associated with long
term survivorship. The archives of the List can be searched,
and questions may be posed to the group. While the list
does not claim to offer medical advice, the insights and
experiences of other survivors have often been invaluable
in finding appropriate care.
Family or friends subscribe to the
List for a variety of reasons. There are practical reasons
why a family member or friend may be the primary link to
the LT-SURVIVORS List, such as better internet access or
more email expertise. In some cases, a friend or family
member is the primary link because they are more comfortable
interacting with the group, or more comfortable reading
about potentially frightening information. Friends and family
members benefit from the support and information provided
by the group, and they also contribute to the group by providing
important information and empathetic support.
How to join the long-term survivors
